SKYCITY Crosses Milestone as Airport Authority Hands over Site to New World Development

(HONG KONG, 28 June 2019)  –  Airport Authority Hong Kong (AA) today handed over the second of two sites (Site A2) in SKYCITY at Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA) designated for the development of retail, dining and entertainment (RDE) facilities to the awarded developer, a wholly owned subsidiary of New World Development Company Limited (“New World Development”).

The handover marked another milestone of the SKYCITY development, a core element of HKIA’s vision to transform from a city airport to an Airport City. The first site for developing the RDE facilities (Site A3) has been handed over to Roxy Limited, the wholly owned subsidiary of New World Development in May 2018.

Fred Lam, Chief Executive Officer of the AA, said, “We are thankful for the Government’s full support to the aviation industry and airport development in recent years, making it possible for us to formulate and implement the vision to transform HKIA into an Airport City, including the SKYCITY development which crosses another milestone today. The 25-hectare SKYCITY is located just a short stroll from HKIA’s passenger terminals, and is conveniently accessible by rail, road and a network of footbridges. Scheduled to be opened in phases from 2023 to 2027, the RDE facilities being developed by New World Development will take up a maximum gross floor area of 350,000 square metres. Leveraging state-of-the-art technology and creativity to develop unique dining, entertainment and retail elements, and combining experiences in learning, exploration and adventure, the project is poised to be the largest facility of its kind in Hong Kong.

SKYCITY enjoys a strategic location of neighbouring the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge which has significantly enhanced the connectivity of HKIA with 10 other cities in the Greater Bay Area.

With an investment of HK$20 billion by New World Development, the RDE facilities in SKYCITY will introduce an array of leading international technovation brands to the city that is set to disrupt the concept of entertainment. It will offer some brand new experience-based entertainment such as Hong Kong’s first indoor and outdoor kart track, AR and VR interactive game facilities and kids experiential zone. Under the theme of novel learning, exploration and adventure experiences, the RDE facilities will provide an extraordinary edutainment experience for both adults and children.

Tender Awarded for Integrated Retail, Dining and Entertainment Development in SKYCITY

A World-class Destination Commercial Development at HKIA

(HONG KONG, 2 May 2018) – Airport Authority Hong Kong (AA) today announced that Roxy Limited, a subsidiary wholly-owned by New World Development Company Limited, has been awarded the right to develop and manage a world-class destination commercial development (Site A2 and A3, the Development) in SKYCITY at Hong Kong International Airport. The Development is a crucial part of the overall long-term development of HKIA. The award follows an open tender exercise held earlier, which received a number of strong bids from local and international developers and retail operators.

Scheduled to be opened in phases from 2023 to 2027, the Development, adjacent to HKIA's passenger terminals, will provide a maximum gross floor area of 350,000 square metres, with retail, dining and state-of-the-art entertainment facilities tailor-made for visitors and local residents of different ages. Under the agreement, Roxy Limited will design, construct, finance and manage the Development, which will be the largest integrated retail, dining and entertainment development in Hong Kong.

Apart from the Development, a hotel is being developed on another site of SKYCITY(Site A1a), for which Regal Hotels Group has been awarded the development and management right earlier. The new hotel is scheduled to be opened in the year 2020-2021.

SKYCITY occupies approximately 25 hectares of land and is well-positioned to benefit from the customer base of HKIA which served 72.9 million passengers in the past year. The passenger traffic at HKIA is projected to rise to more than 100 million by 2030 with the completion of the Three-runway System. SKYCITY will also tap into the full potential brought by the Tuen Mun-Chek Lap Kok Link and Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge that will greatly enhance the connectivity of the SKYCITY not only within Hong Kong, but also the Pearl River Delta.

Mega Integrated Development at SKYCITY
Sets to Transform HKIA into Airport City

(HONG KONG, 17 October 2016) – Airport Authority Hong Kong (AA) today announced its plan for SKYCITY, a major integrated development situated just a short stroll from Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA), with a strategy to expand and transform HKIA into an airport city – a new paradigm for leading airports in the 21st century.

Driven by a vision to create a unique new destination for Hong Kong and further strengthen HKIA’s position as an international aviation hub, SKYCITY will feature retail complexes, entertainment facilities, dining space, hotels, and office towers in its approximately 25 hectares of land at the north of the airport island.

The SKYCITY plan was unveiled at “The Future of Shopping Malls” Business Conference and Exhibition hosted today by the AA, at which international speakers discussed the latest airport city developments in major aviation hubs and the potential for HKIA. More than 300 senior executives from the property development and investment sectors of Hong Kong and major overseas markets, as well as representatives from the HKSAR government, business associations and professional bodies, attended the event.

Speaking on the AA’s aspirations for SKYCITY, Mr Jack So Chak-kwong, Chairman of the AA said, "Our vision is to create a new destination that goes far beyond the traditional notion of a shopping mall. Located right next to the airport, SKYCITY aims to capture broad opportunities in tourism and business, while also providing a dynamic lifestyle and family entertainment hub for Hong Kong residents and visitors alike."

SKYCITY is well-positioned with its proximity to HKIA which serves nearly 70 million international passengers and local residents annually. The passenger traffic is projected to rise to more than 100 million by 2030 with the completion of the Three-runway System, providing a large and stable potential customer base for SKYCITY. SKYCITY will also tap into the full potential brought by the Tuen Mun-Chek Lap Kok Link and the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge, strategic road links that will provide greater interconnectivity not only in Hong Kong, but also with the Pearl River Delta region.

SKYCITY will be developed in phases, in partnership with like-minded developers appointed through open tenders. Phase 1 of the project will comprise a unique retail, dining and entertainment (RDE) destination of 195,000 sq. metres, scheduled to open in 2021, and a hotel providing 450 to 750 rooms, expected to be completed in 2020. Invitations for tender submissions for the hotel and RDE developments will be issued in November 2016 and early 2017 respectively.

In addition to providing an overview of the SKYCITY development, “The Future of Shopping Malls” Business Conference served as an interactive platform for participants to exchange ideas on future retail development trends as well as strategies for engendering engaging, immersive entertainment experiences. At the event some 30 overseas and local exhibitors showcased their latest products and developments in areas including Virtual Reality (VR) technology, sports and entertainment facilities as well as edutainment and family attractions.
